Communication in the Spotted-Necked Otter
Vocal Communication
According to the
University of Michigan Animal Diversity Web
these otters may be quite vocal.
- Davis in Otters: Proceedings of the First Working Meeting of the Otter Specialist Group (1977), who had a pet otter of this species, records that the anxiety call is F! rather than the usual otter Hah!.
- He also records the contact call as a lutra-like chirp (occasionally on two syllables), though Animal Diversity Web describes a harsh mewing.
- Animal Diversity Web speaks of a high-pitched squeaking distress call.
- Davis also records that the female has a complex bird-like burble of metallic chirps which she uses particularly for communicating with her cubs.
